Hello and welcome to our 14th MUN Conference at the International Bilingual School in Hsinchu!  We are so pleased to host you on the campus of the National Experimental School. It is our distinct honor to have you all here and we appreciate all that you have had to do to make this happen.

My husband, Mr Seth Roberts, has had many years of experience running MUN in the US, and worked for UNESCO as Director of MUN operations for a decade.  I never quite knew what happened in those formal events. It seemed so sophisticated, serious, and severe. Now that I advise a club, I see that is it all those qualities, but so much more.  Students often don their best business attire and adopt the personas of true diplomats. They do follow strict protocol about when and how to speak. The events they speak of are often of dire consequence. Yet, it nurtures many minds, builds many bonds, and cultivates memories with like-minded individuals who could be friends for life.

To me, MUN is about optimism.  It is a system to expose young people like yourselves to ways to participate in the global conversation.  That is why we have linked each of our topics of debate to a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the United Nations.  Those goals envision a world without poverty or discrimination or hunger that can be realized if your generation works to achieve that vision. Your participation in MUN lets you know you have the courage, conviction, and competency to negotiate plausible responses to difficult multinational challenges.  It trains you to do the homework to be able to hold your own in an exchange. It forces you to ready to handle points of information (or respond in note form!). It instructs you on best practices in the fine art of diplomacy. It helps make you your best self.

Remember to stay true to your country’s position, follow procedure, and enjoy yourself.  We are so glad you are here.

To all of the delegates and advisors who make a difference every day, it is my greatest joy and utmost pleasure to welcome you all to the 14th annual session of HSINMUN, which is held at the International Bilingual School at Hsinchu Science-Park, Taiwan. As more than 400 high school delegates and their faculty advisors gather as they address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, HSINMUN is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious conferences on the island.

As a THIMUN affiliated conference, HSINMUN has continuously provided an opportunity for students to gain awareness on current global conflicts, to lobby and debate on these issues in a public quorum, and to explore the world of MUN. Participants cooperate and formulate beneficial resolutions each year, committing to their work of diplomacy. I have no doubt that this year will reach the same standards, if not even higher.

I express my warmest welcome to all participants as we hope that this conference will provide you with a broader perspective, help you become more confident, knowledgeable and self-aware individuals. I hope that our months of hard work will meet, if not exceed your expectations, and that we will send you away with a memorable experience you will treasure for a lifetime.

Best Regards,

Ms. Kim Lin

Greetings, my name is Ben Krystal and welcome to HSINMUN XIV!  Model UN is a great way to become a global citizen, grow yourself, and make new friends, and I am very excited to be working with you this weekend. This is my first year at IBSH and eighth year teaching in total.  In addition to cosponsoring Model UN, I teach AP US History, US Government, and World History. I graduated from the College of William and Mary with a B.A. in history and religious studies as well as a Masters in Secondary Education.  During my studies, most of my courses focused on Asia and the Middle East. If you are considering applying to William and Mary, please feel free to ask me any questions. When not working, I enjoy spending time with my dog, Finn, who made it all the way from America!  I also enjoy tennis, golf, baking, current events, and Netflix. Again, if you have any questions, just ask, and if I don't know, I will point you in the right direction!

Best Regards,

Mr. Ben Krystal
